WELCOME TO VANCOUVER INDIGENOUS MEDIA ARTS FESTIVAL

VIMAF is located on the beautiful Coast Salish territory of the Musqueam, Squamish, and  Tsleil-Waututh in Vancouver BC.

Netsamaht

(/Naat-sah-maat/) means “We Are One”

in the Musqueam language of hÉ™nÌ“qÌ“É™minÌ“É™mÌ“. The term and meaning were provided to VIMAF by local Musqueam Knowledge Keeper Shane Point for guidance in developing the 2017 Festival theme. Netsamaht recognizes the tradition of gathering nations coming together in ceremony: singing, feasting, sharing, gifting cultural knowledge, fostering talent, and perfecting tools as one people.

VIMAFs 2017 festival encases traditional approaches to ceremony in contemporary reality, where Netsamaht
 “We Are One”
calls on Indigenous artists and communities to share in the richness of local Indigenous cultures by coming together under gifting, redistribution, witnessing, and celebration.

Many traditions of Indigenous economy include central philosophies on “the redistribution of wealth,” or cultural gifting and feasting provisions. Our Indigenous communities enjoy vast wealth in artistic talent, unique skill sets, and visionary abilities. VIMAF’s 2017 festival will redistribute wealths of knowledge and of artistic works, providing an experiential feast by and for our powerfully talented community.
